A Celebration of Flavor and Sound
Background:
Every great night out deserves an equally great soundtrack. And that’s exactly what you get at Nada, one of downtown Cincinnati’s hottest spots. Whether you are there to dance, drink, or dine, you’re going to like what you hear – thanks to the proficiency of custom installer, William Caston, and to the mastery of NuVo’s Grand Concerto system.
Owner David Falk approached the venture with clear intentions to renovate, revitalize, and restore. The operation, enticingly located beside one of the city’s most attended and versatile theatres, was to boast a menu of bold and delectable Mexican fare, and his heart was set on creating a vibrant atmosphere to match. With hopes of offering both a dynamic club setting downstairs and a comfortable, relaxed dining experience upstairs, all plans pointed to an end result that would look and sound as great as it tasted. Using the remnants of the building’s past sound system as a starting point, the creative minds at Nada wanted to invigorate the facility through fresh technologies and stylish design. This impressive vision to carefully blend the best of old and new came with a litany of needs, and that’s where Will proved the perfect fit. His vast knowledge base, finely tuned skill, and unfaltering “can-do” attitude were exactly what Falk and his team were looking for.
Project Details:
Charged with the technological transformation of the space, Mr. Caston had to incorporate a comprehensive catalog of pieces to address the project’s wide-ranging demands: quality phone and computer systems to foster efficient service; sophisticated flat screen and projection additions to grant conference capabilities; prominently placed plasma televisions to engage patrons with their pristine picture; and an ideal combination of audio components to truly bring the whole scene to life. While many other audio technicians were intimidated by the web of wires this would require, Will was undaunted by the complexity.
In assessing the building’s existing 70-volt sound system in particular, he called upon his resourcefulness and creativity to offer an adaptive solution that would renew and enhance. While seeing the advantages to keeping the previously installed speakers and portions of the residual amp work, he decided to bring in the NuVo Grand Concerto system, along with three of NuVo’s P2100 amplifiers and a NuVoDock for iPod, to elevate not only the resulting sound, but also how the team at Nada could interact with it. Will expertly made the adjustments and conversions necessary for the two systems to cooperate, the Grand Concerto acting as the brain while the sound pulsing out through the speakers thoroughly rocked the whole city block. Considering all angles and details, Will positioned the Grand Concerto’s Control Pads strategically at main entrances and also conveniently at the servers’ stations for anyone and everyone to benefit from the artist and song title metadata delivered on the pad’s clear OLED display. He recognized that the ease with
which the Control Pads can be used and taught would be a plus in fast paced restaurant life, while the locking function could safeguard the venue from curious fingers changing the tunes. Opting to pull the house music from an iPod through a NuVoDock meant simultaneously choosing simplistic operation and maximum song selection control for setting just the right mood. The downstairs would provide access for a DJ or live performer to make their mark on an evening by plugging into the system through a local source amplifier. All of these elements together formed a unique and flexible audio repertoire, able to keep tempo with those lively Cincinnati nights.
Over a two week period Will completed all the pre-wiring, and finished up the entire install in the span of three – all while juggling a variety of other projects. His thorough evaluation and detail-driven foresight propelled the mission to conclusion without complication.
